Arsenal have received a massive boost in their £51 million pursuit of PSG striker Edinson Cavani as the French side have inched closer to securing Angel Di Maria, says the Metro.

Arsene Wenger has already added a quartet of players to his squad, including £30 million man Alexis Sanchez, but he is thought to still be keen on adding some serious competition for Olivier Giroud up front.

The Parisians have been chasing Real Madrid’s Di Maria for the majority of the summer, but due to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play restrictions, they need to balance the books before making a big move for the Argentine.

Cavani is believed to be disillusioned with his position at PSG, having been forced to fill a wide role for most of the last season, and Wenger is keen to capitalise on this.

Liverpool are also thought to be very keen on signing Cavani following the loss of his Uruguay teammate Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Despite playing much of the 2013-14 campaign from the wing, Cavani still managed to bag himself 25 goals in 43 appearances.
