Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is planning a surprise move for Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck, according to reports from The Mirror.

The £20m-rated forward’s future has recently been plunged into doubt amid speculation that he is considering leaving Old Trafford in search of regular first-team action.

When Robin van Persie returns from injury Welbeck will be pushed back down the pecking order with the Red Devils, which is believed to be a great concern for the 23-year-old.

This has alerted Wenger, who is said to be looking to replace Olivier Giroud this summer.

The French hit-man has been the Gunners’ top striker this term, yet his off-field antics and a dip in form are believed to have left his manager frustrated.

Welbeck is seen as a good option, with the youngster possessing the mix of technical ability and raw speed that the Arsenal chief is thought to be looking for.

The England international may well be tempted by the move, with playing time likely to be easier to come by at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham are also interested, as are Everton.

Danny is a very good player but he he is inconsistent and sometimes is the cause of us losing a match. He has been the difference in some matches but if you are inconsistent you become unreliable and you get dropped to the bench.
