Arsenal have turned their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos after missing out on Kostas Manolas, with reports from The Metro suggesting that they’ve opened the bidding with a £10.9m offer.
The Gunners chased the Olympiakos man for much of the summer, but despite talk of an £8m move having been close, the defender opted to sign for Roma this week.
Arsene Wenger is still understood to be desperate to get a new centre-back in after being forced into using Calum Chambers in the role, with Sokratis an option.
The Greece international has been used as a utility man at Dortmund, with his ability to fill in at full-back on either side of the pitch and in midfield having gained him much game time despite the fact that he’s by no means a first choice in any of the roles at the Westfalenstadion.
The Bundesliga giants are believed to be ready to sell, but Arsenal may have to up their offer to be much close to their £20m valuation to get a deal done.
Negotiations are said to be rumbling on, and an agreement could be reached before the transfer window closes on Monday.
Sokratis has earned 51 caps at international level and played for big clubs in Italy such as AC Milan and Genoa, as well as Werder Bremen in Germany and AEK Athens in his homeland.
