Arsenal will face competition from Atletico Madrid in the summer for the signature of Barcelona striker David Villa.

The Gunners were strongly linked with a move for Villa during last month’s transfer window and it was also reported that Premier League rivals Manchester City were interested in the Spanish forward.

According to The Metro, Atletico are now likely to join in the race for Villa should they lose their own highly-rated striker Radamel Falcao.

Barcelona refused to let Villa leave before the end of the season, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will not give up on trying to capture the 31-year-old despite other interest.

Villa is determined to leave the Nou Camp in the summer having only made a total of 22 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions this season and scoring 10 goals.

However it is believed that he would rather remain playing his football in La Liga, and a move to the Europa League champions could present him the the perfect opportunity.

Once again this site is trying to flog a dead horse. Where is your proof? where are your sources that can verify Wenger has stated he will not give up on Villa. If you want 2+2 to equal four you would realise that Wenger is far too involved in getting us in the top four at this moment to think about a striker, no matter how good he was. Sagna should have given you a clue approaching 30 he is only offered a one year contract, but according to you Wenger will pursue a guy four years older than Sagna offer a four year contract, as you’ve reported before! Wenger, 38 year old striker, I don’t think so.
