Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to bring a new goalkeeper to the Emirates this summer, and Brazilian international Cesar has been the heavy favourite for some time.
Wenger is finally ready to launch a bid of £1.5million for the 32-year-old, which he hopes will be enough to convince relegated QPR to part with the keeper who is currently on £70,000 a week at Loftus Road.
Wenger sees the 33-year-old as the ideal mentor for young keeper Woijech Szczesny, who lost his place as the club’s number one towards the end of last season after a series of shaky Premier League performances.
Like many of the club’s transfer targets, Cesar was identified a long time ago, but the Gunners have taken a long time to push the deal forward.
Wenger may also look to push through a move for Swansea City captain Ashley Williams this week, after it emerged club captain Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss the start of the season through injury.
Williams is another who has been a long term target for the Gunners, and is valued at around £10million.
