Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is plotting a move for Yoann Gourcuff as an alternative to Julian Draxler, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Gunners are set to discuss a potential deal for their prime target in the coming days, but it looks unlikely that an agreement will be struck with the Gunners some way adrift of Schalke’s valuation – thought to be in excess of £30m.

As a result, Wenger is looking at Gourcuff.

The Lyon midfielder has been linked with Arsenal consistently over the course of the past few years, with the Londoners known to be fans of the silky passer.

Unlike Draxler, the 27-year-ol is unlikely to be a costly purchase, with his asking price said to be under the £10m mark.

Gourcuff was once thought of as one of Europe’s top playmakers, but series of injuries since a big money move to Lyon from Bordeaux have caused his career to stagnate.

But Wenger is still keen, and sees him as a good addition he plots to keep his side in the title race.

Although his current employers are gripped by financial worry, they have claimed that there is no desperate need to sell.

But it is thought that a significant offer could be successful.
