Arsenal plot double defensive raid

Ashley Williams (Swansea)Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is planning moves for Manchester City’s Micah Richards and Ashley Williams of Swansea, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Gunners chief is set to up his transfer activity over the coming week amid growing concern over the club’s activity this summer.

Having already missed out on big names such as Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez, the Frenchman is determined to lure in some fresh faces, and has made strengthening his defence a priority.

An opening day home defeat at the hands of Aston Villa displayed the Londoners’ vulnerabilities, and Wenger is planning to address these with moves for Williams and Richards.

Williams has been on Arsenal’s radar for much of the summer, and although Swansea are far from keen to let him leave, they have admitted that a tempting offer may force them to sell.

The Welshman would provide competition for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, while adding some much needed physicality.

Richards is Wenger’s other target, with the City defender facing an uncertain future at the Etihad Stadium.

The burly utility man has endured a torrid time with injuries, but Arsenal are hopeful that they can give him a platform to return to full fitness and force his way into the England squad.

Arsenal fans, would Ashley Williams and Micah Richards considerably improve your defence?
