Arsene Wenger is ready to move for Celtic star Victor Wanyama before the transfer window shuts next week, the Independent report.
Arsenal scouts have watched the Kenyan international closely this season and have been impressed enough to recommend that Wenger make him a priority signing before the end of January.
The Frenchman is desperate to add a strong anchor man to fill the hole left by Alex Song in the summer and provide a stable presence in midfield to compliment the creative talents of Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere.
Wanyama has seen his stock has risen considerably on the back of his performances in the Champions League for the Scottish giants, although its thought his £10 million asking price won’t put the Gunners off making an approach given his comparatively low wage demands.
The 21-year-old’s can also operate at centre back, having been used there by Bhoy’s boss Neil Lennon on occasions, and that versatility appeals to Wenger.
Should he fail to prise the 21-year-old away from Parkhead this month Wenger could turn his attention to West Ham’s Mohamed Diame and is prepared to activate the £3.5m releasue clause written into his contract when he arrived at Upton Park in June.
