With just over a month to go until the end of the season, there’s plenty of speculation surrounding the future of a number of Premier League players. And while Raheem Sterling’s future at Liverpool continues to make the headlines, Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is another that could well be on the move this summer.

Walcott has been heavily linked with a possible move to Liverpool, and could be part of a deal with Sterling that would see the pair swap places in the transfer window. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but for Walcott the next few months could be important as he looks to get his career back on track and he needs to seriously consider leaving the Emirates to fulfil his potential.

The 26-year-old has had limited first-team football since returning from a serious knee injury back in November where he spent seven months on the sidelines. He’s made just five starts for Arsene Wenger following his comeback and appears to have fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates.

He’s spent most of his time as a right-sided midfielder during his Arsenal career, but with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mesut Ozil all vying for a similar position, he’s found himself largely used as a substitute.

Walcott has made it known that his preference is to play upfront, but Wenger has been reluctant to allow him that opportunity and given the form of Olivier Giroud it’s hard to see him getting much chance to impress as a striker anytime soon.

And so with little chance of playing in his preferred position and now even struggling to get in the side at all, it could be time Walcott considered leaving Arsenal. With just over a year remaining on his current contract, the Gunners may consider cashing in on him rather than losing him on a free in 2016.

And for a Walcott, he needs to be at a club where he can be guaranteed more football in order to regain his form that has been inconsistent in recent seasons. He still strikes you as a player that has yet to fully reach his potential a decade after bursting onto the scene at Southampton.

Injuries have certainly played a part in that, but a fresh start at a club that could give him more of central role would no doubt help him get back to his best.

He’s sure to have plenty of options, and could easily sign for another of the league’s top-four contenders, which could benefit him hugely especially with the European Championships next summer.

Walcott certainly has the finishing ability to become a useful striker wherever he ends up playing. His pace is an invaluable asset that really does frighten defenders, and his movement and runs he makes means he has the necessary attributes to warrant a chance in this position.

But he could also prove an effective member of a front three given his experience as a wide player, a position that could well be up for grabs at Liverpool this summer, and one that he could prove the perfect fit for.

It would be a shame to see him leave the Emirates, but for Walcott it looks like his best option.
