Arsenal to turn to former Liverpool target

Diego CostaArsenal are set to make a move for Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa if their move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema ends in disappointment, according to reports from The Express.

Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring in a big name star to quash voices of discontent surrounding his summer transfer dealings at the Emirates Stadium.

Benzema is his number one choice, but with a deal likely to be pricey – both in terms of a fee and the player’s salary – the Frenchman is already lining up alternatives.

He sees Costa – who was believed to be close to joining Liverpool a few weeks ago – as the ideal backup option, and could launch a move I the coming days.

The Brazilian only recently penned a new deal with Atletico, but reports suggest that they could be convinced to sell already.

Liverpool saw a £22m bid for Costa rejected, but Arsenal are hopeful that a fresh offer in the same region will be enough to convince the Spaniards to sell, after the 24-year-old was jeered by some sections of the club’s support during a recent clash with Sevilla.

Although he maintains he is happy in Madrid, rumours suggest that the South American only penned a new deal at the Vicente Calderon due to a lack of appealing options from other clubs.

Is Diego Costa a big enough name to be Arsenal’s marquee signing?
