Arsenal will make too many mistakes between now and the end of the season to win the Premier League, according to ex-Liverpool winger John Barnes.
Speaking at the Capital One Cup LIVE blog event in London, Barnes said that the Gunners wouldn’t go the distance, despite being top of the tree going into 2014 – a point ahead of Manchester City after 20 games.
“I don’t think they will win the league even if they buy, Arsenal haven’t had a blip yet and like Liverpool, are needing a better squad to compete,” Barnes said.
“Arsenal have been very good defensively with the likes of Mertesacker leading the back four, but they will make mistakes. ”
And the former England star echoed Arsene Wenger’s opinion on the January transfer window, suggesting that now is not the time to invest in the Emirates squad, despite many Gunners fans praying for a striker to be brought in to replace the injured Theo Walcott.
“January is not the time you buy the players you want, are the big players likely to move now when they are already playing Champions League football for their clubs?”
