The Gunners tried to sign the 31-year old striker in the January transfer window but Barca refused to let the player leave saying that he was still featured in their plans for the team. The Spaniard was amongst a few others that Wenger had targeted during the January transfer window to boost his strike force, Llorente and Jovetic were the others on Wenger’s list, but his interest mainly was in Villa.
David Villa has struggled to get into the team since recovering from a leg break in December and is currently in hospital with kidney stones. He has only managed eight league starts and six goals this season.
He faces stiff competition for a place in the Barcelona strike force with Pedro shaping up to be a pretty good striker and Lionel Messi is also on top form as usual.
It is thought that Barcelona will buying Neymar in the summer so that will enable Villa to leave the club. Despite his contract running out next season, the Catalan giants will be still be wanting a high sum for the experienced striker and £17m is their asking price.
Arsene Wenger has relaxed his age policy on transfers over the last few years but we will have to wait until the summer to see whether he will break the club’s transfer record to bring David Villa to the Emirates.
