According to Mirror Football, Arsenal are preparing an audacious £50million bid for PSG star Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay striker only joined the French Champions last summer in a €65million deal, but rumours of his disillusionment in playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovich were relentless throughout last season. The Gunners' forward line is crying out for reinforcements too, especially following a recent injury to Olivier Giroud. And although Cavani's Emirates arrival would undoubtedly take a significant toll on Arsene Wenger's transfer funds, we at Football Fancast believe Arsenal can't afford to miss out on the South American assassin. And just in case you needed some convincing, here's FIVE reasons why.

OLIVIER GIROUD IS INJURED

Giroud

As Arsenal fans already know and will undoubtedly be fretting about, Olivier Giroud looks set to be out of action for some time after fracturing his ankle against Everton last weekend.

Initially it was assumed he would be out for the next two months recovering, but a scan has revealed that the Frenchman is now expected to be sidelined until 2015, which would obviously severely dent the Gunners' title hopes this season.

Unless Arsene Wenger wraps up a deal for a new centre-forward by September 1st, the north London outfit's goalscoring hopes will be in the hands of 21 year-old Yaya Sanogo, who is yet to find the net in 15 outings for Arsenal, and new signing Alexis Sanchez, who struggled to have any impact up top against the Toffees, as detailed below:

Sanchez vs Everton

If Arsenal don't find a high-quality replacement like Edinson Cavani, their title chances remain slim to none - in fact, their seemingly eternal position of fourth spot could well come under threat.

He's better than Giroud anyway

The injury to Olivier Giroud could well be a blessing in disguise, because Arsenal's forward line has been crying out for reinforcements for some time. In truth, they've never really replaced the netting prowess or quality of Robin van Persie, after he left the Emirates for Manchester United back in 2012.

Whether Edinson Cavani belongs in the same category as RVP is open to debate, but the South American striker would certainly be an improvement on Olivier Giroud.

Admittedly, the Frenchman's front-man services have been vital for the Gunners over the last two seasons. This goal typifies how he's become instrumental to Arsenal's build-up play.

But 28 goals in 72 Premier League appearances is hardly a premium return for a top four striker. Five in 17 Champions League outings isn't the most inspiring total either.

Rather worryingly, he's never hit the onion bag against Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea in the Prem, which is obviously a major problem if Arsenal plan to win the English title any time soon.

Compare that to Edinson Cavani, who claimed a ridiculous 104 goals in 138 appearances at Napoli, and has gone on to net 26 times in 44 outings at current club PSG - despite featuring more commonly as a right-winger.

His European total stands at an impressive 23 in 35, including four goals for the Parisians in the Champions League last season. That's the kind of proficiency Arsenal desperately need if they're to escape the perpetual limbo of fourth spot. Here's a look at all of the 27 year-old's goals from last term:

MATCH-WINNER

Edinson Cavani

Arsenal lack match-winners. Aaron Ramsey took on that mantle last season and new signing Alexis Sanchez will be expected to have a paralleled effect, but overall the Gunners roster is light players who can turn matches in the blink of an eye - especially against elite opposition.

Well, Edinson Cavani would certainly remedy that. On top of averaging 0.7 goals per match at his last two clubs, the Uruguay international possesses the ability to pull off the sublime - those moments of individual quality which separate draws from defeats and three points from one.

Just take a look at his Top Ten goals:

Beastly stuff. Whereas Olivier Giroud rarely gave high-quality defences much to think about, the sheer threat of Cavani's netting prowess and his ability to turn a match on it's head is enough to keep any backline firmly on their toes.

Perfect for the lone striking role

Edinson Cavani (Uruguay)

Not only is Edinson Cavani a guaranteed goal-getter, but furthermore, the Uruguay striker is perfect for Arsenal's lone striking role at the tip of their customary 4-5-1 formation.

Much like Olivier Giroud, he's tall and powerful, capable of using his frame and quality to bring others into the game. This goal against England against the World Cup typifies what Cavani would offer Arsenal in supporting play:

You can already imagine one of Arsenal's potent midfielders latching onto that kind of cross. Admittedly, in terms of creativity, the PSG forward didn't compare to Giroud last season:

But their diverse roles in their respective sides must be considered. And the 6 foot 2 PSG star possesses more than enough potential to provide a like-minded service to Giroud as the focal point of the Gunners' attack, whilst significantly improving upon his goal tally.

VIABLE ALTERNATIVES

Welbeck

With only five days of the summer transfer window remaining, Arsenal don't have much time to consider viable alternatives to Edinson Cavani. Robert Lewandowski, Luis Suarez, Mario Mandzukic and Diego Costa have already found new clubs this summer, whilst Karim Benzema signed a new contract at Real Madrid earlier this month and even Mario Balotelli - essentially the wooden spoon prize for any club on the prowl for a new front man - has now joined up with Liverpool. So what are the alternatives? A £20million loan deal for Radamel Falcao? Porto star Jackson Martinez? Torino forward Alessio Cerci? None are particularly inspiring or financially justifiable from Arsenal's point of view. After that, we're really scraping the barrel. Loic Remy still has an £8.5million release clause, but he's hardly the same calibre as Edinson Cavani. The same can be said for £20million-rated Swansea forward Wilfried Bony. And then there's Manchester United outcast Danny Welbeck:

AKA... this guy:

And perhaps the most humiliating rumour of the lot - Arsenal have apparently offered a contract to free agent Nikola Zigic:

You might remember the striker for measuring in at 6 foot 7 and hardly ever scoring at former club Birmingham
