"We do not need to buy a number of players. If we find top, world-class players we look at it but we have a very strong squad already in numbers, and the basis is to get together, stay together, and start well next season.”

Arsene Wenger’s words make it pretty clear then, Arsenal are after the best players money can buy this summer. The Gunners’ tag of reluctant spenders has well and truly put to bed in recent times following the big money signings of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, so it would be no surprise to see Wenger’s words come to fruition in a few months’ time.

As the Frenchman said, his Arsenal squad needs strengthening in a few areas, with gaps having appeared over the course of the season, perhaps costing the London side a genuine shot at the title. But how can Wenger address this? Well, here are FIVE options…

Petr Cech

Even though David Ospina has become a record breaker in goal for the Gunners in recent times, a new stopper remains a priority. Wojciech Szczesny has been bombed out of Wenger’s plans since the smoking incident over the winter period, and the standout candidate to fill the gap between the sticks appears to be Cech. Reports claim that the Gunners are ahead of the likes of PSG and Liverpool in the race for the 32-year-old, who, despite limited playing time at Chelsea this season, is certainly in the ‘world class’ bracket.

Edinson Cavani

‘El Matador’ has long been considered to be one of European football’s best goal-getters. Cavani currently plies his trade with PSG, but, as with every transfer window since his 2013 move to Paris, he’s being linked with moves away from the Parc des Princes, alerting Arsenal. Strong, quick across the ground, skilful, composed and in his prime, the Uruguayan ticks all the boxes, and could be an upgrade on Olivier Giroud.

Mats Hummels

Although the opening half of the season may seem an eternity ago, Arsenal fans can still remember the defensive woes their side had. Laurent Koscienly and Per Mertesacker’s fitness issues saw the like of Calum Chambers, Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy all used at centre-back, with predictable results. Even with Gabriel Paulista now in, Arsenal could do with a top class central defender to add genuine presence to their backline, and Hummels is an option. The Dortmund star may follow manager Jurgen Klopp away from BVB this summer, and certainly has the quality to be a Premier League success.

Isco

Although Arsenal are well stocked in terms of attacking midfielders, there’s always room for another quality option. And it appears that Isco is on the club’s radar, with a £32.5m move being mooted for the classy Spaniard. Able to play as the ‘No 10’ or in a deeper role, the 23-year-old playmaker is a special talent, mixing neat footwork with excellent vision and positional awareness. Competition for places at Real Madrid has limited his playing time, but in an attacking midfield three alongside Sanchez and Ozil he could be deadly!

Pedro

A World Cup winner back in 2010, Pedro has the credentials to slot into the ‘world class’ bracket. The Spanish wide attacker appears to be edging away from Barcelona due to his bench role, which has led to links with Arsenal ahead of the summer. Although not lightening fast, Pedro is quick over 10 yards and is known for his ability to pop up in the right place at the right time, making him a potential upgrade on the often one-dimensional Theo Walcott.
