Arsenal may have taken their time in getting going during this summer’s transfer market, but after the signing of Alexis Sanchez and the continued links to Sami Khedira, there can be no doubting the north London side’s spending ability in the market.

The World Cup is now over, meaning there should be an increase in transfer activity across Europe. Arsenal in particular will be in further need of strengthening their side after disappointing in the title race last season.

Despite going to extra time, the World Cup final in Brazil as a great end to a fantastic tournament, showcasing some of the world’s elite players.

Following Germany’s 1-0 win over Argentina, here’s a look at five players Arsenal would love to sign.

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels was one of the best centre-backs at the World Cup, but even prior to the tournament in Brazil starting, the German international was on the radar of a host of clubs, including Manchester United.

Hummels has been a key figure in the Borussia Dortmund team over the past few seasons, helping them to back-to-back Bundesliga titles and a trip to the Champions League final. Now he’s cemented his place as one of the world’s best following his World Cup win in Brazil.

Arsenal would surely love to be one of the club’s in contention for the German’s signature. Wenger may have his go-to first-choice pairing in Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, but Hummels would add the kind of quality in depth that hasn’t always been present with Thomas Vermaelen.

Thomas Mueller

Thomas Mueller

Thomas Mueller is a sensational footballer, though he certainly doesn’t look it, with his dishevelled, could-care-less look. He added five World Cup goals to his account this summer, taking his tally to 10 over two tournaments, and that’s off the back of 26 goals with Bayern Munich last summer.

It’s hard to define Mueller’s best position, but that’s what makes him such a fantastic player, as well as a joy to watch. Able to play anywhere across the attacking midfielder as well as at centre-forward, Arsenal would be considerably stronger with the Bayern forward in their squad.

Sami Khedira

Sami Khedira

Sami Khedira to Arsenal is said to have legs, with the Real Madrid midfielder keen on a move away from the Bernabeu.

Khedira struggled with injury last season but returned in time to make a meaningful impact at the World Cup with Germany. His best performance undoubtedly came in the 7-1 thrashing of hosts Brazil.

Khedira would add a lot of strength to Arsenal’s midfield, which is in need of improvement with Mikel Arteta the wrong side of 30 and Mathieu Flamini initially only seen as short-term cover.

Khedira’s signing at Arsenal would take them that much closer to landing the Premier League title next season.

Javier Mascherano

Javier Mascherano

Javier Mascherano may be 30 but he was one of the best players at the World Cup, helping Argentina to the final against Germany in his favoured central midfield position.

The Argentine has seen most of his football at centre-back with Barcelona over the last few years, with the club choosing to address that defensive problem in house by converting the former Liverpool midfielder. But following this World Cup and a change in policy at the Camp Nou, Luis Enrique may opt to play Mascherano in the midfield again.

But what a signing he could be for Arsenal. leadership, the kind of quality and tenacity lacking in the team’s midfield, as well as the emergency option of playing Mascherano at centre-back now that Bacary Sagna, Wenger’s fourth-choice, has left.

Barcelona won’t be letting him go anytime soon, but regardless of age, the former Argentina captain would be an incredible signing at Arsenal.

Julian Draxler

Draxler

This old story again. Julian Draxler may not have featured in the World Cup final, but he has been a part of the German squad and was heavily linked to Arsenal at the start of the year.

Draxler is certainly one for the future, though in most other teams the Schalke midfielder would surely have been a regular at the tournament in Brazil. His lack of games speaks more of the quality ahead of him in the German squad.

But Arsenal are still on the lookout for another forward and Wenger was said to be keen on moving Draxler into the centre-forward position at Arsenal.

He’s unlikely to move on from Schalke this summer, but the fact hasn’t changed: he’d still be an inspired signing for Arsenal.
