Mesut Ozil’s Germany team-mate Philipp Lahm feels that Arsenal must sign a top class striker to get the best out of their playmaker.
The silky passer became the Gunners’ record signing last year when he completed a £42m switch from Real Madrid, and impressed initially.
But despite helping the Londoners to their first trophy in nine seasons – the FA Cup – Ozil’s debut campaign in England has been underwhelming due to a dip in form over the winter.
Some have questioned his work-rate and desire, while others have suggested that he may not be suited to Premier League football.
But Lahm – who plays alongside the midfielder in the German national team – feels that all he is missing at Arsenal is a top class forward to work with:
“Anybody who has played with Mesut will tell you how intelligent he is as a player,” he told Goal.
“His vision is probably the best I have ever seen and that is why it is so important to have the right striker ahead of him.
“He is a dream for strikers and you saw that with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Karim] Benzema when he was at Madrid. If Arsenal can find the right striker who is fast and makes intelligent runs – then Mesut will be devastating next season.”
Arsenal have been linked with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and came close to securing Luis Suarez of Liverpool in 2013.
