German superstar Philipp Lahm has backed Mesut Ozil to prove his doubters wrong at Arsenal.
The silky playmaker became the Gunners’ record signing last year when he arrived at the club from Real Madrid in a £42.5m deal.
Although he started brightly, the 25-year-old has struggled since the turn of the year, with a number of his performances – chiefly those in the defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Bayern Munich – garnering much criticism.
Some have begun to question his suitability to the fast-paced Premier League and even his commitment to Arsenal in the wake is such outings.
However Lahm – whom Ozil is currently away with on international duty – feels that his compatriot has the ability to silence his critics:
“It’s normal that there are ups and downs in your career,” he is quoted by The Metro.
“Mesut is an extraordinary player and for Real Madrid and in the beginning at Arsenal, he was excellent, so we don’t need to worry about Mesut.
“He’ll find his top form again and I can’t see any problems.”
Ozil’s Arsenal and Germany team-mate Lukas Podolski echoed Lahm’s sentiments:
“Criticism is part and parcel of football,
“I think Mesut is a fantastic player. He’s going to give a lot of joy to Arsenal and to Germany.
“He’s still young and a good friend of mine. He’s played many great games and he will play many more.
“I think some of the criticism was a bit exaggerated and unfair at times.”
Ozil was excluded from Arsenal’s starting XI during the weekend defeat at Stoke.
