At the beginning of the season, Arsenal fans sat very clearly in two groups: Wenger In and Wenger Out. There was no middle ground.

Yet despite many fans protesting that it was time for change at the Emirates the Frenchman’s job was as safe as houses. In reality, the board were never going to get rid of Wenger so technically his job was always secure.

Wenger was there to stay – there was no doubt about it – as the board sat quietly, watching how Manchester United reacted as a club when Sir Alex Ferguson retired. The form scared them and the Arsenal board knew they couldn’t afford to have the same sort of slump.

Arsenal started the season well winning the Community Shield with a 3-0 win over the current Champions and after some excellent summer signings many Arsenal fans started to believe this year was their year.

They were wrong.

Earlier in the season there was a lot of hatred towards Arsene Wenger. During the first half of the campaign the team was full of injuries which meant results weren’t going as originally planned. Nearly 50% of the team was out causing Wenger massive problems.

Arsenal have now won seven games in a row and have been in great form since the team came back to full health. Speaking after the Liverpool game, Wenger said:

“We missed important players at the start of the season where we dropped too many points. If you look since everybody’s been back and available, the number of points we have made shows we have the quality to fight at the top”.

Since Christmas with the results greatly improving there has hardly been a 'Wenger Out' mentioned. During the second half of the season games have greatly improved and their last match against fellow Champions League hopefuls, Liverpool, really was the cherry on the top of the cake.

Arsenal have started playing some great looking football. Fans need to realise that Wenger is still the right man for the job; he is strong, he has a desire to win and more importantly he still loves Arsenal as much as he did when he started in the role.

The fact that the Frenchman has been able to deliver such consistency over his reign is impressive. He has stabilised Arsenal and managed to keep his job despite a lack of trophies in the cabinet.

Wenger hasn’t had an easy ride these last few years and whilst realistically his job was never in jeopardy from the board it can’t be nice knowing you have lost the fans. The idea of Arsenal without Wenger is a strange one.

Things seem to have taken a turn for the better and now maybe next year will be Arsenal’s.
