This one reportedly went down to the last day of the window, but Barcelona remained firm in their initial response that David Villa would not be sold in January. It was clearly not about money, as it was said that Manchester City offered £17million for the player on Thursday.
It’s quite clear that Barcelona have concerns over the scoring form of Pedro and Sanchez this season, and David Villa is an insurance policy for a team who are still in three major competitions. At Arsenal, Villa would have been fantastic.
He would have had the small Spanish contingent helping to ease him into life at Arsenal, and his ability in front of goal is superior to anyone currently in Wenger’s team. Arsenal may say they tried and eventually failed in an attempt to sign Villa, but it’s frustrating that the club never had a list of other options. It remains the case that attack is one of the weakest positions in the team.
