As reported by Spanish outlet Marca, Mesut Ozil wants to leave Arsenal and return to Real Madrid having regretted leaving the Spanish giants in 2013.

What's the story?

Marca reckons that Ozil has already offered himself to the Madrid outfit, which is unlikely to be news that endears him to Gunners supporters.

Ozil moved to Arsenal from Madrid in 2013 for a fee believed to be beyond £40m and has been an integral part of the North London side ever since. The attacking midfielder has just over 18 months left on his contract and according to Marca is still negotiating an extension.

That puts Arsenal in a difficult position, if the midfielder isn't exactly bursting with joy to play for Wenger's team, why should they invest a significant amount of money in him? At the same time they can't let a player they signed for millions run out his contract.

Would Madrid want him?

Real Madrid and Mesut Ozil enjoyed some good times together, the player contributed massively to a 2011/12 La Liga win. He's arguably never shown the form for Arsenal that he did in Madrid and a return would likely benefit both parties.

He's still an elite player, no player in the Premier League made more assists than him last season. He made 19 across the campaign, highlighting how important he is to this Arsenal side.

If he's shopping himself out then Madrid would be silly not to at least contemplate it, especially with his contract due to expire in 2018.
