The German midfielder was close to moving to the Premier League on the winter, when the Gunners made a deadline day move for Draxler. And the London club are expected to make another attempt to sign the 20-year-old this summer.
But with potential transfer rivals Bayern Munich reportedly now dropping their interest in Draxler, Schalke are confident that they will keep hold of the German: “I definitely believe that he will be staying at our club for the new season,” general manager Horst Heldt said.
“Julian is an important player in our squad, he is playing regular matches and he is doing quite well.”
Draxler has been in fine form for Schalke this season, scoring five goals and assisting ten, as the club look to fight near rivals Borussia Dortmund for second place in the Bundesliga table. The German, who was unable to score in either of Schalke’s matches against Chelsea in the Champions League this season, is one of the hottest talents in Europe, and has a £35million release clause.
The winger could join fellow Germans Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Özil at the Emirates next season, although Schalke don’t believe that will be the case.
