Amid all the Mohamed Salah hype, it’s long been forgotten that there’s another highly-rated member of the FC Basel cast who has been attracting a wealth of Premier League interest over the last six months – Fabian Schar.
The 22 year-old centre-back has been a vital contributor since joining the Swiss outfit back in summer 2012, helping them claim the Super League title and reach the Europa League semi-final in his debut season.
This term, the Champions League has been the tournament in which the 6 foot 2 defender has most impressed, averaging 3.3 tackles, 4 interceptions and 6.7 clearances per match.
Schar has also earned a reputation for his efforts at the other end of the pitch, with a prolific return of three goals in five outings for the Switzerland national team, and seven goals in 36 domestic appearances over the last 18 months at Basel.
The Arsenal defence isn’t a department that requires drastic attention this January – the Gunners backline currently dons the best defensive record in the Premier League, bedded by the consistent partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
But with Thomas Vermaelen hopelessly out of form and Arsene Wenger’s fourth choice centre-back currently Bacary Sagna, another body at the heart of defence for the campaign’s final run-in can do no harm.
Furthermore, the tabloids believe Schar could be sold for as little as £5million as Basel look to strengthen in other areas, which seems like an absolute steal considering the youngster’s vast potential and previous experience in Europe.
