As if we didn’t know it before kick off at St Mary’s, Arsenal need to do something big in the January transfer window. The 2-0 loss only confirmed what the majority of football fans knew all along, but the severity of the issues in north London appears worse than expected.

Arsene Wenger is rumoured to have around £20m to spend needs at least three players, and here are three problems we thing need addressing…

A proper centre-back...

Although not directly at fault for Tadic’s goal, Arsenal’s centre-back pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker didn’t help matters. Even an ounce of organisation at the back may have prevented the Saints from wandering through the Gunners’ backline, which happened alarmingly regularly for Wenger’s side. A new commanding defender may repair the issue…

Goalkeeper situation…

What was Wojciech Szczesny doing? The ‘Mane incident’ occurred during the first-half, but nobody is any the wiser now the final whistle has gone. The Pole has talked up his maturity and command of the area recently, but he was all over the place as the Saints man opened the scoring. I truth, nine and a half times out of ten the ball wouldn’t have gone in from such an angle, but the fact that it did has raised major questions.

Strikers…

Sanchez

With Olivier Giroud out due to suspension, Danny Welbeck injured and Yaya Sanogo, well… useless, Alexis Sanchez was forced to lead the line again. Although a top player, the Chilean hasn’t quite got the presence to trouble two big centre-backs, and struggled in the role. A top class front-man may have got into the right positions and been able to build some Arsenal attacks.
