Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal fans that they will have to wait until after the World Cup before he signs anyone.

Gunners fans have become increasingly frustrated with Wenger’s transfer activity over the last few seasons, with just the £42.5million arrival of Mesut Ozil last summer exciting the Emirates faithful.

But Wenger insists fans will have to be patient again as he waits for the World Cup to finish in July before signing anyone worthy of strengthening the squad for a more serious title bid next season.

He told London24: “Honestly, in my experience in a World Cup year, it has never been done early.

“Everybody is focused on the World Cup. At the moment you can do nothing because the season is not over. We are today, the 8th of May. The 12th of June is the first World Cup game.

“The Champions League final is on the 24th of May and basically two weeks later it is the start of the World Cup. It is unbelievable.

“There is no time between the end of the season and the start of the World Cup. Nobody will do anything before the World Cup starts.”

Wenger’s words will not be received lightly by Arsenal fans who are demanding a number of high-profile signings from Wenger this summer.
