Arsenal are facing a battle with Serie A giants Napoli, to secure the signature of Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons, according to talkSPORT.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the midfielder during the summer, although Arsene Wenger failed to launch an official bid.

Gonalons’ future has once again become the subject of speculation following Lyon’s poor start to the season.

They currently lie in 14th place after nine games, and reports suggest the 24-year-old may well be seeking a January move.

But should Arsenal renew their interest, they face a battle with Rafa Benitez’s Napoli side, who are also keen to sign the French international.

And the player’s agent reckons his client could well end up in Italy, as former Liverpool boss Benitez is a long term admirer of the player.

“Interest of Napoli? This summer I met [Napoli sporting director] Riccardo Bigon a couple of times to talk about Gonalons but then nothing more,” the agent told Radio CRC.

“The transfer of Gonalons to the blue shirt of Napoli is possible. Benitez already wanted Gonalons during his time as coach of Liverpool.”

Benitez has made an excellent start to life as Napoli boss, with his side currently unbeaten in Serie A and second only to Roma, with 19 points out of a possible 21.
