Aston Villa are close to agreeing a loan deal for former Liverpool defender Aly Cissokho, according to reports from Radio Valencia.

The French left-back spent last season at Anfield, but failed to convince the Reds to snap him up from Valencia on a full basis.

He has since returned to the Spanish side, yet Los Che are rumoured to be ready to let him go once again, which has alerted Villa.

The Midlands club are known to be working with a restricted budget as owner Randy Lerner seeks to sell up, so a temporary swoop for Cissokho is tempting for Paul Lambert.

The Villains will have to pay around £2m to draft him in, and could well look to make the deal a permanent one when the season ends if his impresses.

Villa have only snapped up Joe Cole, Kieran Richardson and Philippe Senderos in what has been a difficult transfer window form them.

Cissokho, 26, made 19 appearances for Liverpool last term and failed to hold down a starting berth after some erratic displays.

He was once considered to be one of Europe’s emerging finest full-backs.
