As calamitous as it has been for much of this season, its hard not to feel a modicum of sympathy for such a massive football club. Aston Villa are falling into the Championship at near terminal velocity and people are almost exhausted with having to mock the Villains.

Various idiotic comments from Joleon Lescott have not helped the club, or his team mates, but their dire first half performance against Southampton has left them fortunate to only be 2-1 down. Changing manager made no difference, changing players has done very little and the boardroom is now as messy as the Richards-Lescott defence.

Unfortunately, Twitter isn't a sympathetic place.

Harsh, that.

This bloke clearly has some pretty controversial opinions, I fear he might be right, y'know.

And, don't get me wrong, I think this Villa account might be a tad cheesed off with the club.

Even being employed by the club now makes you an idiot, apparently!

Unsurprisingly, Lescott's foolish comments are coming back to bite him. Such a massive club, a loyal fan base and a historic stadium are heading into the Championship and even the Twittersphere is running out of energy to mock them. Once the dust has settled on this chaos, we can hope that the Premier League clubs realise the mistakes made at Villa and do all they can to steer far clear. Overpaying past-it players on long contracts (Shay Given and Darren Bent), poor recruitment and general shoddy management has left one of England's biggest clubs preparing to face Rotherham and Huddersfield on a regular basis.

You only have to go back to 2010 to see Aston Villa finishing 6th in the top flight - now they are being considered as the worst Premier League team of all-time. They may return at the first time of asking like Newcastle did, but the fear is it will be a lot more like Leeds United's club trajectory.
