The priority at Aston Villa in recent seasons has been Premier League survival at all costs, something that looks to have been achieved again under Paul Lambert. But for such a huge footballing institution, surely they should be aiming a little higher long term?
Lambert is conducting his own revolution of sorts in the Midlands, looking to build a youthful side able one day to challenge at the very top. Progress has been slow and at times frustrating, but there are definite signs of improvement with things starting to look up for the Villans.
Without the financial resources of the biggest clubs, Lambert has always been forced to tweak rather than try to do anything radical quickly. This summer will be as much about retaining their best players, as it will be about making new additions to the squad.
