The Belgian international was linked with the Premier League giants during the last transfer window, but instead elected to seal a move to the Vicente Calderon from Ajax.
However, the high-flying La Liga side have only handed the 24-year-old only three league starts this term despite having paid £6.1m for his services.
With the World Cup looming, not playing a regular role for the Madrid side is beginning to become a major source of concern for the classy centre-back.
Although he says he is prepared to fight for his future at the club, Alderweireld confessed that he is far from content with his current situation:
“At Atleti, I can’t be happy if I’m not playing,” he is quoted by talkSPORT.
“The team is doing well and I continue to fight for my place, but I don’t think it’s my fault.”
Tottenham and Liverpool could revive their interest between now and the end of the month, with both clubs rumoured to be keen to snap up defensive reinforcements.
Norwich were also linked with Alderweireld over the summer.
