Despite successfully dominating the Premier League last season, with Jose Mourinho proudly looking on at a formidable Chelsea outfit, 2015/16 has ultimately brought about great change for the Stamford Bridge faithful – and the results have proven less than positive thus far.

Although Guus Hiddink represents an ideal candidate to step in for the current league champions until the end of the season, no one with a meaningful link to Chelsea ever wanted to see their team reach such a desperate state in the first place.

Even in light of the growing sense of uncertainty in and around Stamford Bridge, it seems the Blues may not be so keen on sticking with their current club captain during these turbulent times, with communication between player and club reportedly breaking down since the turn of the year.

So with everything that has already gone so wrong for the Blues this season, are Chelsea on the verge of making a massive blunder here, or have the good times come to an end for John Terry and his current employers?

Even though Terry wants to stick it out at Stamford Bridge beyond the 2015/16 campaign, perhaps his time at the top is admittedly reaching the twilight stages.

The 35-year-old centre-back isn’t getting any younger and as the Blues have in-fact been linked with several top class defenders in recent years, Chelsea could surely source themselves an adequate replacement for their long-term captain.

Although John Terry has provided the Stamford Bridge faithful with their most loyal servant throughout the Premier League era, all good things have to come to an end eventually. Chelsea’s ultimate decision on John Terry shouldn’t be based exclusively on nostalgic grounds, as a little pragmatic action towards the future will have to come in to it as well.

The ever-willing 35-year-old hasn’t exactly been entirely effective for Chelsea this season, and although the centre-back still commands a worthy position in the team through sheer experience alone, Terry is seeing his very best level of performance slip slowly and slowly away from him with every passing season.

But whilst Guus Hiddink’s current team must indeed look to build with long-term plans in mind this summer, surely Chelsea would ultimately benefit from John Terry’s irreplaceable inclusion at their club – for one more season at the very least!

We’ve already seen Manchester City attempt to spend their way out of trouble when it came to strengthening Manuel Pellegrini’s back-line, but as both Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi have clearly failed to impress in the Premier League so far, their big money approach hasn’t really been all that successful.

Chelsea could therefore suffer a similar fate if the club decides to part ways with their team captain on rather unceremonious terms this summer. Even if John Terry’s role at the club was to become less influential throughout the course of next season, Jose Mourinho’s permanent replacement will certainly be glad to have Terry on board, just to get him through his first major campaign in the Stamford Bridge dug-out more than anything else.

In the end, despite failing to represent a player still operating at his highest level in the modern era, Chelsea simply need to make sure John Terry is still a Blues player next season, giving the club more than enough time to source themselves a worthy replacement for the Stamford Bridge hero.
