West Brom manager Steve Clarke says that the treatment Rafael Benitez has received at Chelsea has not put him off of a potential future role at the club.
The Spaniard vented his frustration at the Blues’ fans and board on Wednesday, following a turbulent few months in the Stamford Bridge dugout.
Some of Chelsea’s supporters have been far from welcoming to the ex-Liverpool manager, with comments he made regarding the club whilst at Anfield and the way in which former boss Roberto Di Matteo angering many.
But, Clarke, a former coach with the West Londoners, has revealed that the problems Benitez has had have not put him off of being a future Chelsea manager:
“If you’re asking if I want to be manager of a top team in the future, of course.” He is quoted by The Mirror.
“If you don’t have that ambition to better yourself you shouldn’t be in the game. But it’s not for now.
“The connections are inevitable. I can’t do anything about that. Chelsea has been a big part of my life, I’ve spent more than 40% of it connected with them.”
The West Brom coach also showed very little sympathy toward Benitez, insisting that he knew the circumstances of the job when he signed the contract to be interim manager:
“Has he had a fair crack of it? If you are manager of a club like Chelsea you know what comes with the territory,
“Has it (his treatment) been unfair? It’s not for me to judge.”
Despite his outburst, Benitez is expected to keep his place at Chelsea.
