It seems not even Charlie Adam’s wonder-strike from his own half can stop Chelsea’s march to the title.

With only seven games to go it doesn’t look like Chelsea will be caught barring a horrible run of form over the next month and a bit. But Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all stand in their way, three of the form teams in the league - even with Liverpool’s two league defeats in a row they’ve still won four of their last six. And they’re forgivable defeats - against United and Arsenal themselves. So Chelsea still have some work to do.

They scraped past Hull, and they scraped past Stoke in their last two games, and with the possible exception of Eden Hazard, the brightest creative sparks in the Chelsea team haven’t been particularly bright or sparky since before Christmas. Yet they managed wins - big wins.

And the man who scored the big goals was Loic Remy. Often the forgotten man at the Bridge this season, Remy has come up with the all-important goals at important times twice in two games for Chelsea. Even though he hasn’t managed too much game time this season, playing the full 90 minutes only three times in the league, the French international could become Chelsea’s most important player over the next few games.

Every club needs a goalscorer, and Chelsea’s man this time has been Diego Costa. The Spanish international is the league’s joint top scorer and still on course for the golden boot, and his form and obvious threat, at least up until Christmas, have made sure that Remy has played second fiddle all season.

He was bought as backup, of course, but he may have expected more starts, maybe expecting Mourinho to rotate more than he has done. But Mourinho has only really been happy playing players he trusts, and that’s why Chelsea’s core players have played in so many games. And perhaps why they’re starting to struggle now with only a few games to go.

Remy is the man to keep Chelsea ticking over. Those two goals in the last two games already look big, but imagine how big they’d look if Chelsea lost some of the important games coming up, and lost some of their lead.

Last season Jose Mourinho praised Edin Dzeko as the big Bosnian hit form during the run-in and scored some very important goals for Manchester City as they won the title. Dzeko shows the need for a team to be able to rely on a goalscorer, especially in the final few games. City had Aguero and Negredo last season too, and both were on form right from the start of the season. But it was Dzeko who scored the goals when it really mattered. The fact he was left on the bench so often at the start of the season maybe helped with his fitness levels towards the end.

We all knew Dzeko was capable of scoring goals. His best league return was 16 last season, but the two years before that saw him net 14 league goals both times. Remy is of the same ilk, scoring 14 league goals for Newcastle last term, and netting six times in 14 games at Queens Park Rangers the season before. He only came to the Premier League in January of that season, and was playing in a struggling team who finished bottom. But he still managed to become one of the most feared strikers in the league.

This time around, it’s his freshness that may be the difference for Chelsea. Costa is flagging somewhat, Fabregas is too, but Remy looks sharp.

The Frenchman can be the one who gets Chelsea’s big goals over the next few weeks, and he can be to Chelsea what Dzeko was to City last season. His two goals in two games show his form, and the fact that Chelsea are relying on him at the moment shows that their other players aren’t firing as they did before.

So Remy is the right man at the right time for Chelsea, and he’s the man who can get the goals to fuel Chelsea’s march to the title this year.
