Samuel Eto’o appears to have sealed a summer exit from Chelsea by branding manager Jose Mourinho a “fool”.
The Cameroonian star’s comments are a belated response to ‘The Special One’s’ questioning of his age earlier this year.
In an interview Mourinho believed to have been off of the record, he insinuated that Eto’o is actually older than 33.
At the time the African superstar appeared to laugh off the issue with a goal celebration portraying himself to be an old man.
But now it has emerged that Eto’o is actually more annoyed about the episode than initially thought:
“Today, I am 33 years old. And it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it.” He is quoted by the London Evening Standard.
“And you may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters.”
Eto’o’s comments suggest that he will not extend his one-year contract, which expires in a matter of weeks, with Chelsea.
He also went on to hint that he will sign for a another European club playing in the Champions League rather than switch to the MLS or one of the Middle Eastern leagues:
“Some believe I am going to retire in the United States or in the Middle East, but I have regained the joy of the Champions League and I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League. Where? I am not going to tell you.
“But I am going to carry on playing because physically and mentally I feel great.”
