Jose Mourinho has hailed Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane as ‘the best young defender in the world’, according to the Daily Mail.
The Chelsea boss is a huge admirer of the young centre back, who he signed for Real Madrid from Lens for £8million in 2011.
Varane appeared for France Wednesday night’s 2-0 win over Holland, and is expected to be a part of Didier Deschamps’s World Cup squad.
When asked about Varane, Mourinho said: ‘I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best.’
Mourinho reckons Varane will be a big star of the summer’s World Cup, as well as Barcelona and Brazil forward Neymar, and Chelsea’s own Eden Hazard.
“A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time,” he said.
“These are players like Hazard, Neymar and Rafa Varane. Maybe I forget some others.”
Mourinho also believes playing for a club the size of Chelsea is certain to boost a players international chances, citing summer signing Willian as an example.
“When Willian was playing for Shakhtar and Anzhi, he was not going to the national team and certainly when he comes to Chelsea after a couple of months he is selected, so I think for some reason that happens,” he added.
“They have to be at Chelsea to have the honour to be selected.”
