Chelsea Manager Roberto Di Matteo has suggested that Belgian International striker Romelu Lukaku could return to the club in January.

The 19 year old centre forward has impressed with a few eye catching performances on loan for West Bromwich Albion this season and the West London club have an option to recall the striker in a few months.

Lukaku notably delivered a superb performance against Newcastle, managing to score despite his side suffering a 2-1 defeat at St James’s Park.

This has prompted calls that the Blues could be tempted exercise the option they have to recall the striker from his loan spell.

Di Matteo spoke to Sky Sports saying “There's an option in January for us. It's a one-year loan but we have a clause. He's had a good impact but we look forward to him starting a run of games and seeing him progress."

Meanwhile, his current club West Brom seem focussed upon the present, and ensuring the player performs well whilst he is playing for the Baggies.

West Brom boss Steve Clarke when quizzed by sky sports on the issue added "What happens in January happens in January. That's no concern of mine at this present time".

The Belgian moved from Anderlecht in the Summer of 2011 and found his starting opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge, so requested a loan move to gain first team experience.

Whether the player would be keen to be recalled remains to be seen, as he appears to flourishing in the West Midlands, and happy to develop a reputation for being his own type of striker rather than being seen as the ‘new Drogba’.
