Chelsea boss insists big arrival didn’t want Arsenal move

Jose Mourinho is adamant that Cesc Fabregas made Chelsea his first choice this summer, despite suggestions that he wanted to re-join Arsenal.

The Spanish playmaker completed a big return to the Premier League before the World Cup, ending a three-year stint with boyhood club Barcelona.

Fabregas left Arsenal to join the Catalans in 2011 after becoming the Gunners’ captain and a fans’ favourite since breaking through into their first-team as a teenager.

The north Londoners were understood to have had a clause in the deal that took him to Barca to have a first option to sign him, but they passed on this.

Chelsea then moved to snap up the 27-year-old, who was their first arrival of the summer.

Although reports suggested that Fabregas wanted to re-sign at the Emirates Stadium, Mourinho is convinced that the player made west London his favoured destination:

“I spoke with him for 20 minutes. I think he really wanted to come to us,” he is quoted by talkSPORT.

“As you know, Arsenal had an option where they could interfere, but I think he was not open to that, I think he was very, very much in our direction, so it was an easy job for me.”
