Chelsea have completed a £21m deal to bring Nemanja Matic back to the club from Benfica.
The Serbian international put pen to paper today on a five-and-a-half year contract to end weeks of speculation linking him with a host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Liverpool.
Matic only left Stamford Bridge three years ago as a part of the deal that took David Luiz in the opposite direction, after struggling to cement regular first-team action in West London.
Since joining the Portuguese giants Matic has flourished and developed into one of European football’s top holding midfielders.
Despite having endured a difficult first spell at Chelsea, the 25-year-old says that he is thrilled to be back at the club:
“I am very happy for this opportunity. I just want to say I will give my best to help the team and make the Chelsea fans happy.” He told the club’s official website.
Jose Mourinho is also delighted to have Matic in his squad, stating that he feels the Eastern European star has developed well away from Chelsea:
“He has grown as a player in Portugal and has become a fantastic all-round midfielder.”
Matic will wear the number 21 shirt, and could be in contention for a role for their weekend fixture against Manchester United.
