Sergio Aguero’s reckless challenge on David Luiz sparked a mass fracas between both sets of players late in the game between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, Aguero and Fernandinho were given straight red cards by referee Anthony Taylor, with the midfielder dismissed for shoving and appearing to grab the throat of Cesc Fabregas.

Both the Spaniard and Nathaniel Chalobah, who pushed Aguero to the floor after witnessing the striker’s high tackle on Luiz, escaped with bookings.

Aguero and Fernandinho will now serve four-match and three-game bans respectively, while no further action will be taken against Fabregas.

The Football Association has also charged both City and Chelsea for failing to control their players in the dying minutes of the contest, which ended 3-1 to the visiting Blues.

In most of these cases, the clubs are eventually issued with fines rather than anything more serious, but that has not stopped a handful of Chelsea supporters fuming at the news.

Many believe that Antonio Conte and his team should not face any punishment because the players were simply defending Luiz.
