The 25-year-old has matured into one of the top midfielders in Europe during his time with Benfica, so much so that a host of top European clubs are understood to be chasing his signature.
The Portugese club are understood to be willing to do business for £25million, a price Chelsea are willing to meet for a player they sold as part of the deal that bought David Luiz to Stamford Bridge.
It was a piece of business that left a lot of people scratching their heads at the time, and although Matic had not reached his full potential, many at Chelsea believed he had the skills to be a future star for the club.
Ironically, Luiz may well complete a £35million move to Barcelona in January that would go a long way towards funding the Matic deal.
One player who looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge however, is left back Ashley Cole.
The 32-year-old has been linked with a move to the MLS in recent weeks after losing his first team place to Cesar Azpilicueta, but Jose Mourinho has confirmed the left back remains a part of his immediate plans.
“Naturally he will get his contract, because he’s a valuable player for us,” Mourinho said.
“Even if you are not playing every game and you are not a first-choice player, like he was always, I don’t think it means that you are not well, that you are not deserving a new contract.”
