Blues boss Jose Mourinho will be in the market for a high-quality replacement for the PSG-bound Brazilian before the start of the new Premier League campaign in August, and has a reported £50m to spend.
And this would mark the second time Mourinho has made a move for the 21-year-old, after signing him when he was in charge at Real Madrid in 2011.
It was just earlier this year that Mourinho called Varane the “best young central defender in the world” and it’s believed he will follow those comments up with an official approach in the coming weeks.
Chelsea already have Kurt Zouma coming on board next season after securing a deal for the centre-back from Saint-Etienne, but reports surfaced this week that Mourinho may actually decide to send him back to Saint Etienne.
Mourinho has also targeted Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala as a player who could help Chelsea mount a serious challenge on the title next season, but they will have to fight off competition from title rivals Manchester City for his signature.
