The Press association are reporting that the London club are desperate to secure Costa’s signature before the start of the tournament in Brazil, after lodging a reported £32million bid:
“Chelsea have made an offer to Atletico Madrid in compliance with the buyout terms in Diego Costa’s contract, and have been advised that the player has provided notice to Atletico Madrid invoking the buyout clause and directing the club to accept Chelsea’s offer,” a club source confirmed to Press Association Sport.
“Chelsea look forward to entering into formal transfer documentation with Atletico Madrid as soon as possible so that the player can concentrate on the World Cup.”
Costa played a critical part in helping Atletico win the La Liga title, scoring 27 goals as the club beat Barcelona and neighbours Real Madrid to lift the league trophy. But Mourinho is now hoping that the Spaniard will be scoring the league-winning goals for Chelsea next season, as he prepares his squad for his second season back at Stamford Bridge.
The forward has travelled with Spain to Brazil, despite not being fully match fit. Costa picked up a hamstring injury at the end of the season, that limited him to just a handful of minutes in the Champions League final back in May.
