Former Chelsea star Graham Stuart believes that Jose Mourinho must sign another striker this summer or risk a repeat of last season’s issues.

The Blues chief was critical of his forwards last term, with none of his main trio – Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o – truly impressing over the campaign as Eden Hazard ended up as the club’s top scorer.

‘The Special One’ has moved to ease his problems by snapping up Diego Costa and Didier Drogba, but he still has just the three main men – Torres is the third – to call on after allowing Romelu Lukaku to leave for Everton.

The burly Belgian has long been dubbed as a top talent, but Mourinho never warmed to him and was tempted by the Toffees’ £28m offer.

With his transfer coffers further boosted, Stuart hopes that the Chelsea chief will go back on his claims that he will not be making anymore signings to provide Costa with adequate back-up:

“Diego Costa is a magnificent signing,” he told talkSPORT. “There’s no doubt about his qualities and he seems to have settled in nicely. I don’t see him being any problems.

“The issue Chelsea have, is that, [following Lukaku's departure], unless they can get anyone else in, they will be in the same situation they were in last year. Jose Mourinho doesn’t know who to turn to if anything happens to Costa.

“If he picks up an injury or suspension, where does he go? Will he look to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba? Let’s be honest about it. At his age, if he’s not playing at regular intervals, it’s not easy to step into a Premier League or Champions League game [and perform].”

Edinson Cavani has been linked with a £40m move from PSG, while Colombian ace Radamel Falcao is a long-term target.
