Chelsea are keen to open contract negotiations with Ashley Cole following his impressive return to first-team action, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The 33-year-old left-back has found himself back in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI for crunch games with Atletico Madrid and Liverpool over the course of the past week, and has been instrumental in securing good results in both ties.

Prior to the last seven days, Cole had not started a match for the Blues since their FA Cup clash with Stoke in January, with ‘The Special One’ having elected to bench him in favour of Cesar Azpilicueta – who is naturally a right-sided defender.

But his impressive showings have prompted the London club to alter their stance on the situation and indeed look to keep the veteran ace beyond his current deal – which expires in a few months’ time.

Chelsea are rumoured to be willing to present him with a one-year extension, but salary details are as of yet unknown.

Cole himself may well choose to keep his options open, with rumours suggesting a host of Premier League clubs and Real Madrid are interested in his services.
