The Barcelona boss met with club officials this week to discuss their transfer strategy and he insisted that David Luiz was top of his list. The Catalan boss has noticed that the Barca team are weakest in central defence and has had to use players like Song and Mascherano to cover the role there. Vilanova thinks the Brazilian would be a great addition to Barcelona’s defence.
Luiz has had an inconsistent season so far at Stamford Bridge and was deployed to a more central midfield role after Benitez felt he would be better suited there. Chelsea are third in the league and are still competing for a Champions League place alongside London rivals Arsenal and Spurs.
Chelsea still value Luiz and would be highly unlikely to want to sell him in the summer, but if the right money was offered then they might consider it.
Vilanova is also hoping to wrap up a deal for Brazil’s talented striker Neymar, who wasn’t on his best form when playing against England at Wembley. If Barcelona can secure his signature in the summer then that would enable Arsenal target David Villa to leave the club.
