Jose Mourinho believes Ashley Cole’s lack of regular first team football will benefit England’s World Cup campaign, reports the Daily Mail.

Cole has struggled to hold down a first team place at Stamford Bridge this season, with Cesar Azpilicueta Mourinho’s preferred choice at left back.

However, the Chelsea boss believes Cole’s lack of playing time could prove beneficial for Roy Hodgson’s side in Brazil.

“There are national team managers who are very clear: they go with their players, it doesn’t matter if they are playing in the club or not,” Mourinho said.

“Other managers want players who perform fantastically well in the season. And then there are people who like players who didn’t play particularly well in the season.

“Why? Because they are fresher, stronger, don’t have the mental fatigue of competition, and are more ready.”

Cole has also lost his regular starting place at international level, with Hodgson often preferring to use Everton left back Leighton Baines in recent matches.

The emergence of Luke Shaw at Southampton has also cast doubt over Cole’s international future, with the 18-year-old tipped to be close to a first senior call up.
