‘The Special One’ worked alongside the vastly experienced Argentine while in charge of the San Siro club and is said to have struck up a good relationship with him.
Mourinho is known to be keen to bolster his squad at the end of the season, and with Zanetti set to be out of contract a shock deal has been suggested.
Despite his age the versatile South American is rumoured to be ready for one last year playing at the highest level, and Chelsea are said to be prepared to offer him a backroom role once he retires as a sweetener for seeing out his career in London.
Zanetti has notched up over 600 appearances for Inter in a 19-year spell, and has previously indicated that he is keen to see out his playing days in Italy.
But with the futures of high earning players unclear at the club after their recent takeover, he may not be presented with a renewed contract in under six months’ time.
The seasoned pro would act as cover for Chelsea’s backline, but could also be used as a backup for the likes of Ramires and Nemanja Matic in midfield.
