Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is keen to link up with compatriot William Carvalho this summer, according to reports from the Sunday People.

After snapping up Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa – the latter is set to be officially announced in the coming weeks – ‘The Special One’ is keen to bolster the defensive area of his XI.

A top-class partner for Nemanja Matic is thought to be his priority, with Paul Pogba of Juventus having been mooted as a target.

But with the France international likely to cost around £60m, Carvalho has emerged as a genuine option.

The 22-year-old has been starring for Sporting Lisbon for some time, and is considered to be on of his home nation’s top talents.

On top of this, he will command a figure of around half that of Pogba, with a deal worth close to £30m likely to be enough.

Manchester United have baulked at that sum in the past, but with Chelsea having raised £90m in player sales since January they can afford to splash the cash.
