Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant believes that his old club will regret their decision to release Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

The veteran duo were both cut loose by the Blues earlier this summer after failing to agree new contracts, and have since joined new clubs.

Lampard is currently on loan at Manchester City from New York City FC – a move that has upset some west London fans – while Cole has signed for Italian giants Roma.

The pair were instrumental in Chelsea’s successes over the course of the past 10 years, but both were axed as the club look to usher in a new era and cut back on big wages for ageing stars.

However, Grant believes that his former side have made a mistake:

“Chelsea could have used both Lampard and Cole for one or two more years,” he told talkSPORT. “They are still in good shape.

“You need a big squad because Chelsea are playing in all the competitions.

“They could have used them like John Terry. You need young and experienced players in your squad.”

Chelsea have retained John Terry, but Petr Cech may be sold with Thibaut Courtois back at the club.

These people are forgetting that Cashley and Lamps werent ‘Let go’ they were both offered new contracts just as JT was and JT was te only one who wanted to play for Chelsea enough to stay. Where as Lamps and Cole but decided to go grab money and have their egos stroked elsewhere. You cant force players to resign contracts no matter how much you might want to. The only loyalty anymore is by the fans.
