Chelsea full-back Ryan Bertrand is happy that Ashley Cole is staying with the club, and believes that he can learn from England international.
For much of the current campaign it looked as if the former Arsenal defender would be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer, with the Blues reportedly unwilling to renew his contract due to him being the wrong side of 30.
However, in recent times the Londoners’ owner Roman Abramovich has performed a U-turn on his policy of paying big wages to older players, issuing Cole a bumper contract to stay put.
Although his presence is likely to limit Bertrand’s first-team opportunities, the 23-year-old is happy to continue his role as back-up left-back and learn from his elder:
“I have said from the start that he deserves another contract,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.
“We have a good relationship. I’m always learning and there is no one better to learn from.
“He has given me plenty of advice over the years. The best advice is not so much what he has given me verbally but just watching him every day and the way he goes about his business.
“It (their relationship) reflects in our performances when we play together and I am in front of him at left midfield.”
Bertrand went on to say that he is going to focus on improving in an attempt to become the club’s first choice left sided defender:
“It is probably the natural progression to share the left-back role, but I don’t pick the team.
“I just get my head down, train well and hopefully that time will come.”
