According to reports from Marca, River Plate president Rodolfo D'Onofrito has expressed an interest in re-signing Chelsea transfer flop Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian international made his name at River Plate, notching up 46 goals in 111 appearances across all competitions before sealing a €4million transfer to FC Porto in 2009.

The 30-year-old went on to establish himself as one of the most lethal frontmen in world football, netting 72 goals in two seasons with the Primeira Liga outfit and 70 in 91 appearances for Atletico Madrid.

But an injury-plagued spell Monaco instigated a drastic fall from grace. Falcao moved on loan to Manchester United in 2014 before joining Chelsea on the same terms a year later, but has amassed just six goals in his 36-game Premier League career.

Chelsea appear unlikely to sign the 5 foot 9 poacher at the end of the season, creating huge uncertainty over where he'll be plying his trade next, but Marca claim River Plate are ready to offer Falcao an escape route back to South America.

As translated into English by IBTimes, president Rodolfo D'Onofrito told the Spanish publication; "Six months ago I contacted Falcao via some friends that we have in common, to see if he was eager to return to River.

"At the time, he told me that he wanted to continue in Europe, something which is understandable, as he is at a big club (Chelsea) and earning astronomical figures.

"He is the one who must decide if he intends to return to River, as [Andres] D'Alessandro and [Fernando] Cavenaghi did at the time. Everything depends on his decision. If Falcao has [made] the decision to return to River, the doors are open [for him]. It would be really nice to have him at the club again."
